It was brought to my attention by Rays Renegade yesterday that There is another Indian who wore the number 13. Usually this would fine be except that Indian was Omar Vizquel. Omar Vizquel is nothing short of a hero in Cleveland. I was not watching the Indians when Vizquel was their shortstop so I did not know his number. I had heard of him and knew he was very good and very popular. So today I am making another dedication to Omar.
Omar Vizquel is one of the greatest defensive shortstops ever. He has won 11 Gold Glove Awards and has the highest fielding percentage among shortstops who have played at least 1,000 games at their position at .984. He has also turned more double plays at shortstop than any other shortstop in the Majors with 1,657. He has a consistently high batting average and is fast on the bases. He is by no means a power hitter.
Omar played for the Indians from 1994 to 2004. They still love him in Cleveland and gave him a standing ovation at the Texas Rangers spring training game. The Plain Dealer interviewed him during this series and he expressed some interest in coaching. Hopefully the Indians can get Omar back as a coach. He is great player on and off the field and is known for his great attitude towards fans and people in general.
Thanks to mlb.com, Oh my Omar website, and the cleveland Plain Dealer for information.
